Overview
The Schematic Design Phase is where we work with you to define what you are looking for in your home. We need to fully understand what you want in order to develop a design that fits you. We start the process with a Programming Meeting where we define all your wants and needs for your home. Prior to this meeting we will have you complete our Programming Questionnaire. We ask you to collect any pictures or drawing you have that show the aesthetic and character you want for both interior and exterior of your house along with any drawings or photos of the site. Depending on the project, we may visit the site to see the conditions in person and document any unique features that need to be considered. We review zoning and building department requirements and restrictions to make sure that the design we end up with meets all the requirements of the local building authorities. We use the information gathered from all of this to come up with initial design ideas for your home. We look at various options and ideas on how to accomplish all of the things you want. We generate drawings to show these ideas and physical or computer generated models are sometimes used to help you better understand the designs. Through our review and discussion the design will evolve, however this is not a linear process. There will be revisions, rethinking, and redesigning. This is all part of the process, and it takes time. The goal is to establish a single overall design that we can continue to develop in more detail and refine in the following phases of the project. Also, we will work to develop a realistic schedule and construction budget for the project based on the size, complexity and level of finishes you want to use on the project.
Schematic Design Documentation (typically 2 to 3 schemes)
- Site Plan (scale varies depending on site)
- Floor plans w/ room names and overall dimensions (typically at 1/8” = 1’-0)
- Exterior Elevations (typically at 1/8” = 1’-0”)
- 3D model showing basic exterior massing
